I'm not entirely convinced that this would be a good addition to the game myself, but it's been floating around in my head for some time and I thought I'd bounce the idea off the fine people in F&I.
The Orca is way too fat for my purposes; I usually just plastic-wrap up a few frigates and throw them in the fleet hanger of my DST, plus a bunch of unfit hulls and fittings. Basically I would like to see a DST-style ship carrier, something that could carry a destroyer (or two, maybe?) or two frigates along with a cargo hold somewhere around 3000m3. No ship fitting services, no ore bay, just a DST with an SMA instead of the fleet hanger.
Alternatively, a low-slot module that converts a fleet hanger to an SMA.
Bad idea? Intruding on a niche?

James Baboli wrote:Its very close in concept to the bowhead built small, so maybe let that larger version of the same niche of ship carrying shake out and revisit. Was more a wish-list item for a nomadic style of play and also because the whole idea of plastic-wrapping fit frigates is just too noodly in practice. I agree, though, I want to see how the Bowhead pans out.

Joe Risalo wrote:Uhh... If all you're worried about is small hulls, the. Why not just repackage them and toss them in an Indy ship? Rigs, for one, insurance, for two. Right now I can fit two frigates in a DST if they're plastic-wrapped but, as stated, it just doesn't seem right (has nothing to do with the 10k ISK for the contract, either). Either way, ship might not be needed and we'll want to see how the Bowhead plays out, too. But I believe there is a niche to be filled with a DST-sized ship transport below the Orca (or maybe I'm the only one in it? v0v)

Joe Risalo wrote:I realize that, but I don't know is such a small m3 is really worth it... You'd need to be able to carry at least two cruiser class ships and 20k standard hold... Otherwise,it's not really that useful for a lot of people. Makes sense. That would end up being something I wouldn't use (I think an SMA that big would warrant a slower align and warp speed than even a DST) but it's probably a better ship for the game.

Khiluale Zotakibe wrote:Last time I checked, you were able to put fitted ships inside the fleet hangar, at least in the Orca (as long as they are not bigger than the fleet hangar capacity of course). Have you tried that in a DST? Because if that works and what you're asking is a ship with a SMA the size of the DST's fleet hangar, then it would have no added value to have that extra ship in game. Good lord man, why didn't someone tell me this earlier? WHERE HAS MY NATURAL CURIOSITY GONE?
Confirming this works with a DST.
Khiluale Zotakibe wrote:That said, if you're pointing to an SMA between 100k and 250k (at max skills), then I would actually like to see that happening. It would make logi pilots in incursions that have both basi and scimi delighted as they would no longer need a fat orca to move 2 cruisers around or go back and forth between old and new focus to get both ships to the new focus.
P.S. - This would also give another utility to the ore industrial skill besides being a prereq for the bowhead for those that don't have any interest in salvaging. This thread is now about a ship with a 250Km3 SMA and sensible skill requirements.
